I don't know this particular camera very well, but I'm good pals with XL-400, Xl-401 and XL-601. Minolta had an electronic shutter control which your camera may have. To figure out if it's this or a cable release, all you need is a thin piece of stiff bare wire. Insert it into the remote socket with the camera set on single frame mode (don't put any pressure on anything inside the socket, just touch!). If you fire off a frame, it's electronic, if not, look for threads around the hole for a cable release.

If it is an electronic release, you can cobble something together with a mini phono plug, a push button and some wire (Radio Shack).

These later XLs had automatic time lapse (intervalometer). Look for a knob on yours to set the shutter rate faster and slower.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">i do see a hole-type thing at the top and it does seem to be treaded kinda like a tripod hole thing would be threaded.

    Hmmm....

It sounds like a socket for mounting a movie light! I'm thinking something on the side of the camera no bigger than like 1/8" (3mm).

your looking for something that resembles an ear pug / microphone socket. however, its smaller then those 1/8 vs 1/4". so if you can find someting like that either under the handle or on the sides, then you rocking!
